POLL: Most Americans still favor Ukraine support

Recent polls indicate that slim majorities of Americans continue to support aiding Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Here are some key findings:

Earlier this month, a Gallup poll found that 46% of Americans believe the U.S. is not doing enough to help Ukraine, marking a significant increase from December 2024. This shift is attributed to President Donald Trump’s actions and policy changes regarding Ukraine.

Overall, a majority of 53% support continued U.S. assistance to help Ukraine reclaim its lost territory, even if it prolongs the conflict. This, of course, contrasts with Trump’s preference for a swift resolution.

Not surprisingly, there is a significant partisan gap in opinions on ending the war quickly versus supporting Ukraine’s territorial recovery.

Republicans favor a quick end to the war, while Democrats and independents support continued involvement.

Most Americans sympathize with Ukraine over Russia, with 59% expressing sympathy for Ukraine and only 2% for Russia. However, only about a third of Americans support Trump’s decision to suspend aid to Ukraine. As a result, half of Americans believe his approach to Ukraine is bad for the U.S., and only 29% think it is beneficial. Additionally, nearly half of respondents in one poll believe Trump favors Russia, which further erodes trust in his policy decisions.

Also, a Chicago Council on Global Affairs-Ipsos poll found that majorities support including the U.S., Russia, Ukraine, and the EU in peace negotiations.

These polls suggest that despite partisan differences, there is a growing consensus among Americans that the U.S. should increase its support for Ukraine. The Trump administration’s policies, including a temporary suspension of aid, have not diminished public support for Ukraine. Instead, they have highlighted the divide between public opinion and the administration’s stance on the conflict.

The ongoing conflict and potential peace negotiations will likely continue to influence American public opinion, with many favoring a strong U.S. role in supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and opposing any concessions to Russia.
