Jo is absolutely right,
Egg prices in the United States have reached unprecedented levels, with the average cost for a dozen large Grade A eggs hitting $4.95 in January 2025, marking a 53% increase from the previous year and surpassing the previous record set in January 2023 by 13 cents.
Yikes!
Wholesale prices have also surged, reaching $7.86 per dozen in February, leading to significant supply shortages at grocery stores where some retailers have had to limit purchases. (Last night, my local grocery store was practically out of eggs).
Eggs are more expensive than they have ever been.

He’s the co-president now but he’s blaming Biden.
Because of fucking course he is. https://t.co/w1zzGsjAg9
In a recent press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt attributed the rising egg prices to policies enacted during President Biden’s administration, specifically pointing to the culling of chickens as a contributing factor to the current supply crisis. She claimed that these actions led to a significant reduction in chicken and egg supply, resulting in prices climbing by 65% since Biden took office.
Are the cost of eggs former President Joe Biden’s fault?
Answer: No
The primary driver of these soaring prices is an ongoing outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), which has decimated chicken flocks across the country. Since the outbreak began, over 108 million egg-laying hens have died or been culled to prevent the spread of the virus. This situation has been exacerbated by increased demand as Easter approaches, further straining supplies and pushing prices higher.
We saw a similar situation a few years ago. MAGA convinced the public it was Biden’s fault but there was a viral outbreak among birds that resulted in price increases. That stated, President Trump’s tariffs will DIRECTLY impact the price of eggs and contribute to an already complex situation in the U.S. egg market.
The newly imposed tariffs on imported goods are fueling an egg-buying frenzy at retailers like Costco, as consumers rush to stock up before prices increase further.
Overall, egg prices are at historic highs due to multiple factors including avian influenza and seasonal demand. And prices will soar even more due to Trump’s tariff policy.
